Steampunk Goggles FTW by Ska-T-Sama Steampunk Goggles FTW by Ska-T-Sama
Goggles I made for my Halloween costume. Some screw here and there, gorilla glue as well. Most parts that look like they can move and spin do. Feel free to use it as a stock as well because, man, that is a creepy smile.

Parts and helpful tips:
(1) Opera binoculars.
(2) Go older! Antique shops are a treasure trove for really old watches, but be careful not to get scoundreled into paying more than $10 for a broken one. (Oh yeah, and try to only buy broken watches, old working watches are awesome and shouldn't be disassembled)
(3) Some parts were glue, most parts I put together using screws. Although you can use glue on the whole thing if you don't have a drillbit sitting around.

Bonus PROTIP: Typewriters also have some amazing parts that can be used. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH TYPEWRITERS. Everything is spring-loaded, and as anyone who has taken apart a playstation can tell you: if not disassemble properly it CAN cause some pretty bad cuts.

Bonus PROTIP again: I used Ski Goggles for a base to put everything on, it also makes it comfortable to wear. (I can wear these goggles all day easily enough)

Pretty much anywhere, seriously I don't think I've been to a single Antique place without seeing at least one typewriter and it'll run anywhere from $5 to $20. Any more than that is a rip-off unless it's a classic or somesuch, but 50s-70s typewriters are cheap and plentiful.

That give me an idea, I think the only one I ever saw was sold already in a chartity shop. Not many antique places in S wales but there one or two I can try

Thanks

Hey
Im trying to make a pair of my own and was wondering if i could shake some advise out o' you
(1) what did you use for the lenses ???!
(2)where did you get the good looking gears - so far ive disassembled 2 watches and a clock and i found some pretty cool stuff but i haven't found as many gears as i thought i would . I found 1 (:steaming:) metal gear and all the rest were ugly white plastic gears (damn modernisation :shakefist: )
(3) what did you use to put it all toghether? :o-glue?

Thanks
!

your advise dragged me out of my "ill never be able to make them" mind-set

I wanted to buy antique watches but the thought of destroying one turned me off it . I never thought of asking for broken ones ...thanks

In my trial and error madness, for some reason i thought a cd player would have gears !(yeah i know-retarded !) only to open it , be met with wires and feel incredibly stupid

and i actually have old ski goggles lying around somewhere too

that was really helpful thanks a lot !

good shit man. but you might have OVER adorned it. the gears and crap are suposed to look like they aid in the function of the item. prefferibly actually doing so. but ya they look good tho lol

Also: Typewriter parts. But be very careful with the typewriter as it's parts tend to be spring loaded, so watch your fingers. I don't think it could hack them off, but it'll hurt, possibly blood.

Oh, and don't get discouraged, I've had three typewriters: one that I keep in my room because I'm a writer and I like my "roots" and two to make crazy steampunk stuff, they're relatively cheap. $20 AT MOST. (The one I bought for the these goggles cost on $10.)

Shouldn't be hard at all!

Check this out if you live near London: [link]

Not in London? Just pick a new category from up top, there's lists for Ireland, Scotland, whatever.

Happy hunting!
